Officer Fired After Fatally Shooting 15-Year-Old

Former Balch Springs police Officer Roy Oliver was sacked after fatally shooting 15-year-old Jordan Evans in the head with a rifle. "I acted on them", Balch Springs Police Chief Jonathan Haber said Tuesday evening. As a father, I can not begin to imagine the pain they are experiencing.

A family statement released on Tuesday night called for disciplinary action against other officers who "extended this nightmare for those children".

The department's account of what happened in the shooting changed after Haber admitted Monday that a auto full of teens was driving away from police when an officer armed with a rifle fatally shot the teenager in the head.

Per the Associated Press, attorneys for the family, Lee Merritt and Jasmine Crockett, praised the police department for its quick action to fire the officer. Spotting the vehicle leaving, Oliver opened fire from his rifle. Despite ordering the auto to stop, the vehicle continued to back away. He was sacked on Tuesday.

"After Jordan's two brothers, Vidal and Kevon, along with their two friends, were forced to experience this tragedy up close as occupants of the auto, they were immediately treated as common criminals by other officers; manhandled, intimidated and arrested, while their brother lay dying in the front seat", the family said.

"After Jordan's two brothers, Vidal and Kevon, along with their two friends, were forced to experience this tragedy up close as occupants of the vehicle, they were immediately treated as common criminals by other officers - manhandled, intimidated and arrested, while their brother lay dying in the front seat", the Edwards family said in a statement.

During the meeting NGAN member Reverend Jeff Hood said he told Dallas DA Faith Johnson how important it is that her office do all they can in terms of pursuing charges against Oliver.

"Our family is working hard to deal with both the loss of our beloved Jordan and the lingering trauma it has caused our boys", it said. The attorney said Jordan's older brother, 16, was detained by police overnight but not given a reason or charged, and was not informed police had killed his brother until being released. The police also did not reveal the race of the fired officer.

"Balch Springs PD called the Dallas County Sheriff's Office and asked if they could restrain Jordan's father because of his hostile behavior", Merritt said, according to the newspaper.

His funeral is scheduled for Saturday morning.

"It is also imperative that we aggressively pursue these two separate investigations to preserve the trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve".

"I take responsibility for that", Haber said, according to CNN. But on Monday, Haber reversed course and said, after reviewing video, the vehicle was driving away from police. That statement was contradicted by video footage captured on the scene. My department will continue to be responsive, be transparent and accountable'.

"(That's) my inability to get all the facts like I should have", Haber said.
