New England Patriots re-sign cornerback Malcolm Butler

New England Patriots re-sign cornerback Malcolm Butler

In a report published Sunday, the Chiefs are "almost certainly to be" the New England Patriots season opening opponent.

The tender was at the first-round level and carries a salary of $3.91 million for the 2017 season, according to ESPN.

The Saints never planned to sign Butler but they appear to be interested in a possible trade for the 27-year-old cornerback. Where will Butler call home for the 2017 season? But Butler wasn't signed to an offer sheet, which the Patriots could've matched to keep him; or if they chose not to, they would've received a draft pick in compensation.

As Doug Kyed of NESN noted, no offer sheet has been made, and the transaction allows the team to discuss trades. Trading Butler is an obvious way to get that pick back.

First, it is the 65th birthday of Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who since taking over as coach in New England in 2000 has become arguably the greatest coach in National Football League history, winning an unprecedented five Super Bowl championships. It wasn't necessarily too big of a surprise, but in no way does that mean Butler will remain with the Patriots.

Butler has played three seasons in New England.

Currently, the Patriots don't have a pick in the first or second round of the draft.

So look to the offensive line, the defensive front seven, and at strong safety as the Patriots make their picks in the 2017 NFL Draft. Butler's fate is likely to be known by the end of the month.
